The Importance Of "Flow" and How To Give Your Employees More Of It

Have you ever experienced a complete sense of fluidity between your body and mind? A period of time where you simultaneously feel your best and perform your best? For most, this is an experience that we have all had and is commonly referred to as “being in the zone.” This state is known as “flow” and was popularized by the well-known psychologist Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi in the 1970s.

Over the last several years, flow state has become an increasingly popular topic, particularly in the workspace. Csíkszentmihályi describes flow as “a state of complete immersion in an activity.” One of the distinguishing characteristics of flow is that it’s accessible to everyone. That said, there are barriers to achieving a flow state, and one of the most challenging variables to overcome, especially in the workplace, is interruptions.

In the era of COVID19 with the majority of the workforce being decentralized to work from home, organizations have been faced with challenging security decisions. For many CISOs and IT Managers, the battle of security vs convenience is all too familiar. To limit exposure to potential security breaches, many teams have had to increase their 2FA/MFA policies, which means that individuals working from home, many of which rarely received authentication challenges when on-site, are now experiencing multiple interruptions a day. This not only has a financial cost but a productivity and happiness cost.

Recent studies indicate that it can take roughly 30 minutes of uninterrupted focus on a task in order to achieve a state of flow, and once in a flow subjects saw a significant increase in productivity. However, when a flow state is interrupted it can take on average 25 minutes to get back into the original task, plus up to an additional 30 minutes to regain the flow state so they can be fully productive again. This poses a significant challenge to teams that are required to complete multiple MFA challenges throughout the course of their day.

One solution that can be applied to reduce interruptions for your employees is the automation of 2FA/MFA. This not only allows for organizations to reduce their overall IT costs associated with security but allows for valuable time to be given back to your employees so that they can work uninterrupted. Implementing Twosense directly impacts users’ ability to achieve a flow and can also aid in reducing employee frustration.
